Boost Your Immune System and Prevent Flu

Flu can be very distressing; thus it is necessary to prevent flu from occurring. Like most diseases, boosting the immune system is one of the most effective ways to prevent flu. The immune system defends the body against diseases and other harmful invaders, including bacteria and the flu virus. The body’s capability to protect against these invaders is called immunity. Building one’s immunity against all invaders is a much more wide-ranging method than the singularly focused flu vaccination. Below are some suggestions to help boost the immune system and thereby avoid the occurrence of flu: Proper Hygiene to prevent the flu: Flu is highly infectious. It can be easily be transmitted from person to person–through inhalation droplets, direct transmission and indirect transmission. Flu virus can go into the body through the air that we breathe; but more frequently, it is transmitted from one person to another by touching either a sick person directly or touching inanimate objects that are contaminated by the flu virus. For this reason, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) suggests health practices to prevent flu, such as: frequent hand washing with antibacterial soap and water or with an antiseptic solution and the avoidance of touching face, eyes, nose and mouth especially in public areas.Healthy Diet: A complete food pyramid-based diet generally improves the human health and resistance. Organic and chemical-free meats, poultry, dairy, fruits and vegetables are some of the best “immune-enhancing foods”. Consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables are especially important; they contain high amounts of antioxidants and vitamin C which are identified to be immune-system boosters. Probiotics also take part in building the body’s capability to fight off infection; and mushrooms have also been proven to have immune stimulating properties that can improve immune-competent cell activities. Coconut oil on the other hand contains lauric acid and monolaurin which can destroy lipid-coated viruses such as influenza because of its anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-protozoal properties. Ample Sleep: Sleep also plays a huge role in promoting a healthy and well functioning immune system. Proper rest gives the body time to restore damaged tissues and renew energy stores. Research studies have made known that sleep affects an individual’s hormonal balance, especially the hormones cortisol and melatonin. Sufficient levels of these hormones are necessary to a properly functioning immune system.Reduced Stress Levels is a great natural flu remedy: Stress can be associated to almost all diseases. A person that is extremely stressed is predisposed to a variety of illness including heart diseases, cancer, lung ailments and mental illnesses. Excessive stress also weakens the immune system and increases the risk for infection or viral and/or bacterial invasion.
